Starter or alternator? They fail differently

My car died while driving — is that the alternator?

Usually. When a car dies in motion and will not restart, the alternator has often stopped charging and the battery ran the car until it was flat. We test the charging system rather than assuming, because a bad ground or belt can look identical.

Will I need a new battery too?

Sometimes. A battery that has been deeply discharged by a failed alternator may not recover, especially an Arizona battery already worn by heat. We load-test it and tell you honestly which way it went.
